Pascual Polabí s.r.o.

Pascual Polabí s.r.o. was founded in 2006 by Ing. Tomáš Valtr with Spanish company PASCUAL HERMANOS from the province of Murcia. Since 2008, it has been owned by G´s Group Holdings CZ s.r.o.

Since its beginnings, the company has been engaged in the cultivation of leaf vegetables, mostly various types of salad. It gradually increased its cultivated area, and with it production volume. It farms on land rented from the Pěstitel Stratov corporation. For 2012, salad production is planned on a total area of 320 ha.

Of the varieties cultivated, the main crop is iceberg lettuce, which will this year be cultivated on a total area of 230 ha (more than 70% of the total area). Other leafy salads grown are Little Gem, Lollo Rosso, Lollo Biondo, Endive, Romaine and Escarole, while additionally celery and some baby lettuce varieties are also grown.

All our main varieties grown have received the KLASA award from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic for meeting seven high-standards of criteria. The cultivation technology was taken from our English partners who have many years’ experience with growing salad both in England and in Spain. Pascual Polabí s.r.o. All salad varieties are grown only from young plants in a soil block with dimensions 4x4 cm. The young plants are planted in cultivated beds from mid March until around 20 August. In 2012, a total of around 16 million young plants will be planted, meaning that each day roughly 110 thousand young plants must be planted. For planting, the company uses Zema and Regero planters. It has a total of 5 of these planters available to use.

Our weather conditions mean that harvesting usually begins in the second week of May and ends during October. Special harvesting machines known as rigs are used. One harvest requires a group of 16 workers and final preparations for market are also made right on the field (packing into perforated PE bags and stored in carton containers or crates).

Harvested salads are also cooled in a vacuum cooler. The aim of this operation is to achieve a cooling of the product to a temperature of 3-4°C over roughly 40 minutes, to get rid of any excess moisture and thus to extend the lifetime of the product. For an average yield of between 60 – 70%, the company must harvest and dispatch more than 60 000 salads of various type every day during the season. Sales are organised via G´s Marketing CZ s.r.o..
